This is a sloppy review because I’m not going to spend a second longer on this book than it deserves.
My most generous, devil’s advocate analysis of Man of Steel and Velvet: would society be better off if all men followed the precepts in this book? Depends on where you’re standing. If you’re a male WASP, maybe. If you’re a woman, minority, or not cishet, certainly not.
Although this tough breed of men is no longer necessary in order to exist, we do still need real men if we are to achieve a world worth living in.
Defining some traits as masculine and some as feminine is useful, even if it may not be accurate. The world indeed needs people who exhibit masculine traits if we are to achieve a world worth living in. And I have a suspicion (that is not backed up by data) that most men and women are most fulfilled when cultivating traditional gender traits and roles. That said, I’m all for freedom of opportunity, and my agreement with Andelin mostly ends here.
But where are the heroes of today? Where is the man who will proclaim, Give me liberty or give me death!?
Where is he, Andelin? I don’t see you stepping up to throw your life away.
Homosexuality is a perversion encouraged when normal heterosexual drives are interfered with.
Andelin, have you considered that you might be a little bit gay? Because no amount of interference or weak masculine role models or whatever you denigrate as the gay boogieman could possibly make me not appreciate tiddies. That’s on you, buddy.
I should’ve stopped reading here, but I acknowledged Andelin’s backward views as a product of all the leaded gasoline he inhaled and gave him the benefit of the doubt.
[The man] does not have the temperament assume the monotonous and trivial tasks of the household, to tend the children, do the wash and cook the meals.
lol speak for yourself bitchboy, us real men are independent and fully capable of feeding ourselves.
If [a masculine man’s] burdens become heavy, he doesn’t run away from them or turn to others for assistance.
Hear that, men? Don’t ask for help. Suffer in silence. toxic AF
Never use negative means of minimizing a problem. For example, never say, “I had it far worse,” or “Others have a harder time than you,” or “You should be thankful for what you have.”
Chestnuts like these are what I was hoping for. Unfortunately there weren’t nearly enough to justify the bigotry.
Homosexuals are fighting for their rights.
Wow, how dare they.
The likelihood of [sexual] assault is increasing.
Is it? Or is it just coming out of the shadows? Particularly the shadows of the church?
